Match your target exam

Select Exam (HSSC / SSC / CPCT)

Choose the exact exam for which you are preparing. Rules for mistakes and timing will automatically adjust to that exam pattern.

Select Language (English / Hindi)

Pick English or Hindi based on your paper. Font, keyboard logic and mistake checking change as per language.

4
Set your timing

Select Time Duration

Fix test time as per your exam pattern (e.g. 5, 10, 15 minutes). The timer will start the moment you begin typing.

5
Use standard texts

Choose Book & Chapter

Select the book and chapter / paragraph from which you want to practice. We use commonly recommended exam books and official passages.

  • Correct use of Hindi matras and symbols
7
End the test

Submit Test

When time is over or you finish early, click Submit. Your typing is immediately checked against the original passage.

Stenography & typing tips

Practical tips for exam-oriented practice

Small corrections in technique can create a big difference in your final speed and accuracy.

⌨️ Typing Tips

Focus on building a clean and consistent typing style before chasing very high speeds.

  • Focus on accuracy first – maintain at least 95–98% accuracy before pushing for higher WPM. In exams, high speed with low accuracy is not useful.
  • Maintain proper spacing – avoid extra spaces before commas, full stops and brackets. Use one space between words and after punctuation.
  • Avoid unnecessary backspace – frequent corrections break rhythm. Correct only when absolutely required in exam-style practice.
  • Develop typing rhythm – press keys softly and steadily instead of hitting them hard. A smooth rhythm reduces fatigue and increases consistency.
  • Use home-row position – always return fingers to ASDF / JKL; for English or the central row for Hindi layouts.

📝 Steno Tips

Stenography requires smart practice with clear rules, not just raw speed.

  • Follow exam-specific rules – each board (SSC, HSSC, Court, etc.) has its own marking scheme. Practise with the same rules enabled in Steno Exam Master.
  • Revise mistakes after every test – immediately repeat dictation for lines where strokes were missed or wrongly transcribed.
  • Practice with real exam format – same speed, same passage length, and same transcription time as your actual exam.
  • Time management is key – divide your time between shorthand practice, transcription and error review. Do not spend your full time only on new outlines.
  • Maintain neat notebooks – clear strokes and spacing help you read faster during transcription, reducing typing mistakes.
Rule awareness

English & Hindi typing rules used in checking

Understanding checking logic is as important as speed. Steno Exam Master follows exam-oriented rules for both English and Hindi papers.

In government exams, wrong use of capital letters is generally treated as a full mistake, especially in:

  • Starting letter of sentences.
  • Names of persons, departments, designations and places.
  • Abbreviations (e.g. SSC, HSSC, CPCT, Govt., Ltd.).

Always carefully match the original passage. Do not randomly capitalise or convert capitals to small letters. During practice, slow down slightly whenever you see a capital letter coming next.

Extra or missing spaces are a very common reason for losing marks. Exams generally follow these principles:

  • Single space between each word – never press space twice.
  • No space before comma, full stop, question mark or colon.
  • One space after punctuation marks (except before closing brackets).
  • In Hindi, avoid breaking words in the middle by extra spacing around matras.

While practising, keep your thumb movement consistent and avoid tapping spacebar unnecessarily when you feel nervous.

Missing or wrong punctuation can change the meaning of a sentence and is almost always counted as a full mistake.

  • Use the correct symbol – comma (,), full stop (.), colon (:), semicolon (;) and hyphen (-) as shown in the passage.
  • Keep brackets, quotation marks and slashes in the same order as original.
  • In Hindi, do not replace the “।” (danda) with an English dot.

During revision, quickly scan only punctuation marks while ignoring words. This helps you catch punctuation errors separately from spelling mistakes.

Hindi typing mistakes mostly occur in anusvaar (ं), matras and conjunct (half) letters.

  • Anusvaar (ं) – used for nasal sound. Using an extra or missing anusvaar is usually treated as a full mistake.
  • Half letters (्) – created using “halant/virama”. Wrong use in conjuncts like क्त, त्र, ज्ञ, श्र results in spelling errors.
  • Matras – गलती in matras (ा,ि,ी,ु,ू,े,ै,ो,ौ) is counted as spelling mistake, even if the base consonant is correct.

Always practise with the same keyboard layout that is used in your real exam (Inscript, Remington, Kruti Dev, etc.) to avoid confusion in matras and conjuncts.

Steno Exam Master aims to follow the checking style of government exam boards:

  • Full mistakes – wrong word, missing word, extra word, wrong capitalisation, wrong punctuation, major spelling difference.
  • Half mistakes – minor spelling variations, acceptable alternatives where boards give partial penalty.
  • Ignored mistakes – differences which are normally ignored by examiners (e.g. some spacing issues within limits, allowed abbreviations).

This logic is updated according to the selected exam so that your practice result is as close as possible to the real evaluation.

Hindi typing shortcuts & alt codes

Common Hindi symbols & useful key methods

These are some frequently used characters in Hindi typing. Exact key combinations may vary slightly with font and keyboard layout, so always confirm with your exam instructions.

Character Shortcut / Key method Usage tip
। (Danda) Windows Alt code: Alt + 2404 or dedicated key in exam software Use at the end of every Hindi sentence instead of English full stop (.).
॥ (Double danda) Windows Alt code: Alt + 2405 Occasionally used in headings or Sanskrit texts. Mostly seen in official book passages.
ं (Anusvaar) Commonly: consonant + anusvaar key or Windows Alt code Alt + 2306 For nasal sound (e.g. हिंदी, अंक). Do not replace with full “ङ” unless written so.
् (Halant / Virama) Dedicated halant key or Windows Alt code Alt + 2381 Use to create half-letters in conjuncts (क्त, त्र, ज्ञ). Missing halant changes the word.
ः (Visarga) Windows Alt code: Alt + 2307 Mainly in Sanskrit-based words. If present in passage, typing it is compulsory.
ॐ (Om) Windows Alt code: Alt + 2384 Used in some official documents, religious references and logos.
₹ (Rupee symbol) Ctrl + Alt + 4 or Windows Alt code Alt + 8377 Type exactly as shown in the passage for salary, fees or amount related texts.
ज्ञ, त्र, श्र Consonant + halant (्) + second consonant (layout specific) Practise these common conjuncts repeatedly to avoid spelling mistakes in Hindi dictations.

Note: On many exam systems, special fonts (e.g. Kruti Dev) or specific Hindi layouts are used. Always practise on Steno Exam Master with the same keyboard option that your exam uses.
